Rock the Vote Statement On The Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2014

Below is Rock the Vote President Heather Smith’s response to today’s introduction of the Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2014 to the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate.

“We applaud the bipartisan leadership in Congress for taking action to restore the Voting Rights Act, which was gutted by the Supreme Court last summer.”

This legislation is a critical first step in protecting the right to vote. Next steps should include further protections, in particular those for minority and student voters that are disproportionately affected by restrictive voter ID laws.

As Congress works to address voter disenfranchisement, the President’s Commission on Election Administration is expected to release its report on improving the voting experience. We look forward to those recommendations, and all efforts, to modernize our country’s election process. We intend to do all that we can to support these efforts to strengthen our democracy through ensuring a more fair, accessible, and efficient voting system.”
